Description
Explore the techniques for creating oil paintings with strong lighting effects. Students will learn the correct use of photographs to understand composition, values, color temperature, paint mixing, and paint application. Day one will be a full demonstration with shorter ones as needed. Accuracy in drawing will be emphasized. Constructive feedback will be given to each individual each day and collectively on the last day of the workshop.
Supply List
This is only a guide to what I use. Bring your own supplies that you are comfortable with. If you need to buy paint or brushes, please buy the best that you can afford. No Grumbacher, 1980 or Winton student grade. All these supplies can be purchased at Mo’s and you will get a discount if you tell them you are an AGL member or mention that you are taking an AGL workshop for a student discount.
Photos
Though I prefer painting pleine air, I occasionally need to use a photo. Please select at least three photos from your ipad to paint from or bring an 8×10 photo. Be sure you really like them. You can’t make something good with a photo you don’t like.
Painting surfaces
I prefer centurion linen panels. If you have none, you need to gesso your canvas at least two times. Sizes should be 12×16 (two) or 14×18 (two). I put a light wash of burnt sienna with gamsol and wipe lightly to have a stain rather than painting on a white canvas. You should complete at least two paintings by the end of the class.
Oil Paint
All brands are not equal. M Graham, Holbein, Old Holland are premium brands.
Richardson, Rembrandt, Windsor and Newton, Gamblin are mid-grade.
Winton, Grumbacher Academy, and 1980 are low grade.
My color choices
Having all colors is not necessary. A palette of warm and cool is what I start with.
Titanium white
Lemon yellow ( cool)
Cad yellow med or deep ( warm )
Cad red lt ( warm)
Cad orange(warm)
Alizarin crimson ( cool)
Burnt sienna or burnt umber( warm)
Ultramarine blue ( cool)
Thalo blue( add white to make a close version of cerulean)(warm)
Permanent green light( warm)
Viridian ( cool)
If I use a medium, I use gamblin solvent free gel in a tube.
Convenient colors I use are yellow ochre, dioxazine purple
Brushes
I start paintings with a bristle brush and finish with synthetics. I use Simmons flat bristle 1″, 1/2 “, 1/4”. My Preference on synthetics are Princeton aspen, same sizes. A liner brush with long hairs. They are going to stock them at Mo’s or order online.
Other
An easel, palette (I use the gray disposable paper one), paper towels (I use old rags), odorless mineral spirits or gamsol with a container, palette knife, trash bag.
